How to Get a Broken Key Out of a Door: What to Do When Your Key Gets Stuck in the Lock

There are few things more frustrating than coming home after a long day of work, putting your key in the lock and finding it suddenly stuck in the key hole, leaving you stranded outside your home with no way to regain access.

If you need to promptly regain access to your home, hiring one of the 24 hour locksmiths in West Hills, CA is the best way to quickly and easily resolve the problem. Most locksmiths can respond to the situation very quickly, and they should be able to assist you with both regaining entry to your home as well as inspecting your lock to make sure that the problem doesn’t strike again in the near future.

If you’d like to try to retrieve your key and regain access to your home on your own, however, there are a number of things that you can do to try to remedy the situation, including:

  • Apply lubricant: The first thing that you should do in case of a key stuck in a lock is apply lubricant. Try using a non-corrosive, readily available lubricant like WD-40. Spray the lubricant directly into the keyhole, and gently wiggle the key back and forth. Then, spray any other areas of the lock that you can see. First, try to twist the key, and then try to remove it.
  • Avoid excessive twisting: As frustrated as you may be, twisting and tugging the key with reckless abandon may just make your situation worse. You might end up damaging the lock further, or even breaking off the end of the key inside the lock. In cases like this, the locksmith you eventually hire may have to drill out the old lock and replace it with a new one!
  • Try shifting the pressure: Gently maneuver the key around the inside of the lock as best you can, shift pressure up, down and to the sides. Press on the “button” of the lock itself, and gently lift up on the key and try to remove it. If this doesn’t work, try applying more lubricant before attempting to remove it again.
  • Heat it up: Sometimes, the metal in your lock may shift and warp with temperature changes. Heating up your lock with a hairdryer or similar tool can help expand the metal and release your key. Try holding a hair dryer over the lock for a number of minutes, and then try to remove the key with a gloved hand.
